Every good exported or imported from the United States must be assigned a 10-digit commodity code. US importers use a system called the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) while US exporters have a choice of using the HTS or the Schedule B. Both systems are based upon the international Harmonized Tariff System developed by the World Customs Organization.

Classification is the foundation for establishing duties, collecting statistical trade data, and can be the basis for admitting, prohibiting, or limiting trade in certain commodities. Importers and exporters have no choice but to develop the expertise to accurately select these codes. Improper use of the codes can result in punitive regulatory action. Code selection also can affect commercial cost through increased duties.

This one-day, fundamental course is designed to assist importers and exporters in building classification skills.

What will be covered:

  • Overview of the Harmonized System
  • In-depth review of the structure of the tariff
  • In-depth discussion of the General Rules of Interpretation, the protocol for selecting a classification
