In whatever language it is written, NAFTA simultaneously presents one of the greatest business opportunities and challenges facing businesses in North America today. While on one hand NAFTA reduces trade barriers between Canada, Mexico and the United States, on the other it has constructed a complex set of rules making it difficult to understand and cumbersome to implement.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has taken a hard line with the business community as it enforces the arcane rules of this agreement. CBP has already levied multi-million dollar penalties against two high-profile companies for improper use of the NAFTA.

This one-day BEC course is designed to help the US exporter and importer navigate these treacherous waters and to take full advantage of the NAFTA.

BEC's NAFTA course includes:

  • Overview of what the NAFTA is and is not
  • Discussion of NAFTA benefits and whether or not a company should participate in the agreement
  • Introduction into the Harmonized System, the common tariff codes on which NAFTA rules are based
  • In-depth review of the NAFTA rules of origin used for suspending duties and fees
  • Overview of the NAFTA rules of origin for marking purposes
  • Discussion of best practices for implementing NAFTA into a business
  • Detailed discussion of the NAFTA certificate of origin
  • NAFTA’s influence on other duty deferral programs including the effects on Mexican Maquiladora/IMMEX facilities
  • Regulatory obligations and government enforcement under the agreement
  • Introduction into the other modern free trade agreements that have been implemented since NAFTA

Who Should Attend?

Strategic business and functional leaders will find this course a helpful tool for properly implementing and controlling use of NAFTA within the company. Daily users of the NAFTA will benefit as they learn tactical skills for performing their jobs. Trade compliance professionals will also find this a good opportunity to review the agreement and introduce it into their organizations.

While not a prerequisite, attendees will gain additional insight into the NAFTA as it applies to their companies if they bring harmonized tariff codes for their products with them to the seminar.

Upon completion of the BEC's NAFTA course, participants will:

  • Understand how to qualify a good for duty-free treatment under the NAFTA
  • Understand when and how to complete a NAFTA certificate of origin
  • Understand the regulatory risks and responsibilities of participating in NAFTA
  • Know how to develop a game plan to implement a NAFTA program

Attendees will also receive the study guide "NAFTA - A Practical Guide to Regulation Documentation and Procedures".
