What does it take to be a leader?
Is leadership an art or science, or a little of both?

This three-day course will provide you with an overview of the skills needed to become an effective leader. It is especially appropriate for mid-level managers who aspire to an executive leadership position.

The course will cover a variety of a topics ranging from a historical perspective and theory to application and interaction in the classroom. It will focus on understanding and applying the external and internal processes (the science and art) of effective leadership to help you improve your own ability to lead. Insights and strategies learned can be applied to organizations, community groups, and/or personal life.

Content Includes:

  • Images of leadership
  • Leadership traits (good and bad)
  • Debate “Are you born or made a leader?”
  • Historic and contemporary leadership theories
  • Emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness
  • Personality types and effective leadership 
  • Understanding the “next level” (movement from management to executive leader)
  • Connective leadership
  • Leadership and spirituality (not religion)
  • Gender and multi cultural perspectives of leadership
  • Successful leaders and lessons learned
  • Why leaders fail and what to avoid
  • Personal leadership vision/mission

Upon Completion, You Will:

  • Be ready to pursue more in-depth courses in leadership
  • Understand the role of leadership in an organization
  • Become familiar with leadership traits
  • Be able to apply leadership techniques within your current role

Course Format

Sessions are held once a month for three months on Fridays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on the MSOE downtown campus*. Free parking is provided. Some additional online activities are also required. This is a graduate-level course in the Rader School of Business so participants are expected to meet all course requirements. About the Instructor

Dr. Kelly OttmanDr. Kelly Ottman has extensive experience providing leadership programs to executives and aspiring leaders throughout the world. Her Ph.D. in Adult Education includes emphasis on Organizational Leadership. In addition to teaching in MSOE’s Rader School of Business, Dr. Ottman provides independent consultation to local, national and international executive leaders, leadership teams, and management groups from an array of industries and professions
