The BEC is offering a two-day session in Lean Accounting. The Lean Accounting course will give participants an understanding of how traditional accounting methods often support the creation of manufacturing and business waste that is targeted for elimination during a Lean implementation. Participants will learn how accounting and manufacturing can "team up" to insure a successful Lean implementation.

Individuals who should attend Lean Accounting include accounting and operations employees.

BEC's Lean Accounting course content includes:

  • Introduction to Lean as a strategy, Lean tools and the paradigm shift needed for Lean
  • Review of Lean success stories and the case for change
  • Hands-on simulation of a Lean factory and the impact of flow on the financials
  • Primer on Lean analytical tools including Takt Time, Line Balancing, Standard Work and Cells
  • Comparison of traditional accounting with Lean Accounting and Accounting for Lean
  • Financial impact of a successful Lean conversion

  • Lean administration as it applies to human resources
  • Organizational and cultural changes with Lean

Upon completion of the BEC's Lean Accounting class, participants will:

  • Understand how to forecast the financial impact of Lean on their firm's financial statements

World-renown Instructor

This course is taught by Jerrold Solomon, winner of the 2008 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize for his recently published book Accounting for World Class Operations. He is also the author of Who’s Counting?, which explains how accounting and manufacturing must develop a partnership to achieve world-class results.

"The examples on how to process the changes on the balance sheet and income statement were both helpful yet eye opening. Here I never knew how the benefits would start out as losses on financial statements."

– Matt Andersen, Lean Enterprise Coordinator, Rice Lake Weighing Systems, Rice Lake, Wis.

"The instructor did an excellent job presenting a concentrated amount of material while engaging the class throughout the day."

– Dave Gawthrop, Electrical Division Controller, Sauer Danfoss, Plymouth, Minn.
